Four amateur explorers are using a giant freezer to prepare for their trek to the South Pole later this year. Training begins on Tuesday in the freezer in New Covent Garden, which the team are using to acclimatise themselves to the conditions expected.
The men, including three from London, will travel 170 miles in December to raise money for children's charities.
They will wear exact replicas of the clothing worn by Captain Scott's team during his expedition 95 years ago.
The kit consists of fur mittens, woollen balaclavas, Gabardine smock tops and trousers.
'Beaver mittens'
Expedition leader Simon Daglish said: "The temperature can vary quite considerably but I think the lowest we're likely to get to is about minus 40 degrees Celsius.
"You do look silly walking around with big beaver mittens and a balaclava but we can get an idea of how to use the kit in varying temperatures."
The team are raising money for children's charity the Winnicott Foundation and Tommy's, the baby charity.
Some of the money raised will also go to Racing Welfare, a charity linked to horseracing and breeding.
