The landscape was expected to fetch up to 120,000 at Sotheby's
A previously unknown painting by John Constable, discovered in a Japanese collector's store, has failed to make its reserve at auction.

The oil sketch of Dedham Vale in Suffolk, where John Constable grew up, was expected to fetch between 80,000 and 120,000 at auction at Sotheby's.

The landscape, completed in about 1810, failed to meet even the lower end of the estimate at Thursday's auction.

Sotheby's said it could not reveal the reserve price.
