MRSA baby death inquiry widened
Glynis and Luke Day
Luke's mother Glynis Day said she wants action to be taken
Experts have widened their sweep of a hospital where 36-hour-old Luke Day died of MRSA in February.

Luke, whose family lives in Woodbridge, Suffolk, died at Ipswich Hospital after contracting the bug in hospital.

The source of the infection was not found in the maternity department and officials said experts would now examine the entire hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said the investigation was likely to last for several months.

Cause of death

Luke is thought to be the youngest victim of the bug, which has attacked hospital patients throughout Britain.

Doctors suspect he became infected when the bacteria entered the bloodstream through his umbilical cord.

NHS officials called his death "a tragedy of the highest proportion".

Luke was born naturally, weighing 7lb 7oz, and showed no signs of ill health, but he died a day later.

A post mortem examination, carried out at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London, found the cause of death was septicaemia caused by MRSA.
