Police urged motorists to take extra care in the snow and ice

Nine schools in north Staffordshire have been closed because of problems caused by snow and ice.

The primary and secondary schools in Stoke-on-Trent and the Staffordshire Moorlands were shut for staff and pupils' safety, council officials said.

Police said high winds were creating deep drifts on many exposed routes and urged motorists to take extra care.

Temperatures across the county were not expected to rise above freezing throughout Monday.

Among the schools shut were Longton High School, Heathfield Special School, in Chell Heath, Manifold Primary, off Leek Road, and Cicely Haughton School in Wetley Rocks.

Meadows Special School, in Knutton, Grange Primary School, in Normacot, Abbey Hill Special School, in Bucknall, Merryfields School and Horton Lodge Community Special School were also shut.

Meir's City Learning Centre was also shut on Monday.
