Report calls for smoke-free city
Ashtray in pub
Smoking kills more than 400 people in the city a year
Smoking should be banned in all of Stoke-on-Trent's shops, offices and factories, according to a new report.

A steering group, set up by the city council, says the government's ban on smoking in pubs which serve food will have no effect on many premises there.

It says 64% of pubs in the city, rising to 84% in the poorest areas, will be exempt so wants to go further to tackle the 400 deaths from smoking every year.

The report will be discussed by the council on Thursday.

The Smoke-Free Stoke group was set up last year to put together an action plan to achieve a smoke-free city.

It aims to protect workers' health and safety by providing smoke-free workplaces and public areas.

It is recommending the city does become smoke-free and supports the group's action plan.

The council is already implementing a ban in its buildings and entertainment facilities from 1 January 2006.
