Two rescued after 'tomb stoning'
Swimmers are being warned about the dangers of jumping off structures into the sea after two people were injured in separate incidents in Sussex.

A man, in his 50s, suffered head and neck injuries after jumping from Brighton Pier on Saturday afternoon.

A few hours later, coastguards assisted a 13-year-old boy who dived into rocks near Shoreham Harbour and had suspected head, neck and spinal injuries.

Coastguards said "tomb stoning" into the water was a dangerous pursuit.

Mike Greiner, of Solent Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said the rise in the number of people jumping into the sea was causing concern and people were advised not to take unnecessary risks.

"It is very hard to judge the depth of water due to swell and sea conditions.

"Serious injuries, often resulting in loss of life, are often sustained when hitting the seabed or an underwater obstruction," he warned.
