Charlotte Kerwood now hopes to become an Olympic medallist |
A Commonwealth Games double gold medallist has had a surprise homecoming party near her East Sussex village. Charlotte Kerwood, 19, won the women's double trap and the pairs' double trap shooting events at the games in Australia this month.
She was planning "to go home and have a bath" in Sheffield Park on Tuesday, but was met instead by her supporters at the nearby Northall Clay Pigeon Club.
Ms Kerwood now has her sights set on the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
She has three Commonwealth golds to her name after picking up her first in Manchester in 2002.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet," she admitted on Tuesday.
"I didn't know anyone was going to be here, so it was fantastic to come home and have everyone cheering for me."
Her mother Jan said the people of Sheffield Park had been behind her daughter "all the way since 2002".
Ms Kerwood's father Dan added: "To have a daughter who won one gold was terrific, but now she's on three golds, it's just absolutely marvellous."
