The council wants to create 900 park and ride spaces |
Opponents of council plans for a park and ride facility on the outskirts of Brighton were holding a public meeting on Saturday. The two sites being considered in Patcham, to the north of the city, are Patcham Court Farm and a sports field at Braypool.
Residents fear pollution and increased flood risk, as well as a loss of homes and amenities such as allotments.
The council said both sites were easily accessible from the A23 and A27 roads.
"It makes sense for park and ride sites to be where most traffic passes," read a statement from Brighton and Hove City Council.
"It is not an idea unique to Brighton and Hove and such schemes work well in other cities such as Cambridge and Oxford."
The council stressed that nothing has been decided yet |
Opponents were meeting at Patcham Community Centre for an update on the proposals and to "gauge whether there is continued support for our protest".
Their main objections centre around pollution of Brighton and Hove's water supplies and the local environment in Patcham, which they say will result from increased traffic levels.
The council said no decision had been made on what would happen to six residential cottages at Patcham Court Farm.
It also said that allotments or leisure facilities lost to any development would be replaced.
A decision is expected on whether to proceed with "either or neither of the sites" at a committee meeting in December.
A protest is planned then as well as at a full council meeting on 24 November.
