Opponents claimed views of the De La Warr Pavilion would be spoilt |
Plans for a large hotel complex on a Sussex seafront have been revised. Developers wanted to build a 60-bed hotel in Bexhill, on the site of the former Metropole Hotel, along with houses, office space and shops.
But local people said it would destroy the seafront and block views of the town's De La Warr Pavilion.
Rother District Council said it was looking for an alternative site for the hotel but plans for developing the pavilion car park would continue.
Leader of the council Graham Gubby said the plans were still an "integral part of the regeneration of the town".
But he had asked the taskforce in charge of the project to change its plans for the site of the hotel because an old putting green would have been destroyed. The taskforce agreed to his request.
Mr Gubby said he supported proposals to build on the pavilion car park but said the public parking spaces lost as a result would have to be made available elsewhere.
He added that in order to improve Bexhill more sites for development need to be identified and support from residents is essential.
"I am confident that we can succeed - but there will still be difficult and frustrating times ahead and no doubt more contentious debate," he said.
The Metropole Hotel which used to stand on the site was demolished in 1955 after being damaged by bombing in World War II.
