The developers hope to attrract big name stores |
A 50m plan to revitalise Brighton Marina with new shops, restaurants and flats has been unveiled. Parkridge Developments hopes to improve the marina's "concrete jungle" image among visitors.
The firm proposes building two large blocks of flats and a new shopping area - which they hope will attract big name stores.
A floating pontoon will house a waterside cafe and restaurant with outdoor seating.
Under the plans, the Merchants Quay site will also have a new transport hub and car parks, giving visitors easier access.
The main vehicle entrance, which currently features long winding roads and heavy concrete ramps, will be redeveloped.
Pedestrians and cyclists will be given safer and better access |
Pedestrian access will be made safer and cycle lanes introduced.
Philip O'Callaghan, managing director of Parkridge Developments, said: "A lot of people who come down to the marina, when seeing initially this concrete jungle, are tempted to turn on the spot and not come in here.
"First impressions are lasting impressions and people need to feel they're in a friendly, safe environment - and that's what we want to create as part of this next phase of development."
The plans will go before Brighton and Hove City Council in two weeks.
If approved, the redevelopment project could be completed by 2006.
