Third time lucky for marina plan
Hartlepool Marina
The plans include a nursing home and creche
More than 1,000 new flats are to be built at Hartlepool's Marina after a proposed development was approved at the third attempt.

The plan, for a new business park and housing, had been deferred twice by Hartlepool Borough Council's planning committee.

The scheme, which includes a nursing home and creche, is the final part of the jigsaw to redevelop the southern tip of Hartlepool docks.

Stuart Monk of developers Jomast said: "The water frontage makes this an ideal site for the apartments development.

'Housing choice'

"It is close to the town centre, and close to all the transport hubs.

"The idea is that business can locate in an attractive environment, with good parking, and close to the town centre."

Councillor Bill Isley, chairman of the planning committee, said: "Some councillors and council officers were concerned that this site is so close to the town centre.

"They feared there may be a "doughnut-effect" with the centre of Hartlepool being hollowed out and surrounded by other developments."

Stuart Green, council head of planning, said: "Regeneration is a continuing process and we need to make sure the Marina is fully linked to the adjoining town centre.

"It will offer state-of-the-art new business floor space, and more variety in the choice of housing."
