G8 ministers will be in Sheffield for three days |
Make Poverty History campaigners are asking politicians attending next week's G8 meeting in Sheffield to join local people for a bowl of rice. Senior ministers from the group will be in the city and are due to attend an official dinner at the Cutlers' Hall.
But protestors say they should instead have the meal millions of people are forced to eat every night.
They are organising a rice picnic on Devonshire Green which they say will be attended by hundreds of people.
Barriers and defences
Campaigner Chris Malins said: "When countries like ours are seen to be treating the poorest countries in the world unfairly, that makes the world a dangerous place.
"We can either try and solve that by putting up barriers and defences or we can really solve it by tackling poverty.
"We don't know if the ministers will come but it would be fantastic if they did."
At the Sheffield meeting, senior ministers from Britain, US, Russia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan will discuss security and justice issues.
