Large numbers of South Yorkshire drivers are breaking bus lane laws
The number of motorists caught abusing bus lanes in South Yorkshire is "disappointing", according to the officer leading the clampdown.

More than 475 fines of 30 have been issued to drivers across the county.

Police have been patrolling areas where people drive and park illegally in the lanes and drive through bus gates.

Acting Ch Insp Mick Booth said: "The figures are disappointing and they won't get any better until drivers stop breaking the law."

Safety aim

More than 200 motorists were caught last week in Sheffield alone.

"This is a long-term initiative and we will continue to issue tickets to those who offend. There are still drivers out there who think they won't get caught but sooner or later they will."

The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has urged motorists to heed the warnings.

Spokesman David Young said: "The aim is to make the roads of South Yorkshire clearer for the safety and convenience of other road users."
