'Virtual bus lane' plans for city
Bus stop
Waiting for late buses could become a thing of the past in York
Public transport in York is about to be revolutionised with the launch next month of "virtual bus lanes" to speed up journey times in the city.

Satellite tracking technology has been adapted to allow traffic signals to be changed if a bus is running late.

Council network manager Peter Eveley said: "This technological wizardry is a sort of virtual bus lane if you like."

The equipment will also give people in bus stop queues and on buses up-to-the-minute arrival times.

Mr Eveley said the technology would enable his team to identify full buses which are running late.

"We can actually command the traffic signals ahead of the bus to give the bus priority," he said.

He hoped the system would improve travel conditions for everyone including car drivers.
