Police say an investigation will be carried out into violent clashes between rival football fans in Sheffield. Trouble flared before and after the Division One match between Sheffield United and Cardiff City at Bramall Lane on Saturday.
Police wearing protective equipment, mounted officers and the helicopter were brought in after officers learned that a group of Cardiff fans planned to arrive early in order to confront United supporters.
The intelligence proved to be correct and the result was described by Superintendent Martin Hemingway as the worst football violence seen in South Yorkshire for many years.

Superintendent Hemingway added: "Some Cardiff fans also turned on police officers in a number of violent incidents. "The enjoyment of a superb game of football by many decent fans was marred by the appalling behaviour of a minority of people who were clearly intent on causing trouble from the outset."
Five Cardiff supporters and one Sheffield fan were arrested - two of the Cardiff fans were charged with affray, one with threatening behaviour and two with disorderly conduct.
The Sheffield supporter was charged with threatening behaviour.
Kick-off delayed
Two police officers and three Cardiff fans sustained minor injuries in the disturbance and one Cardiff supporter went to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield where he was given treatment for a head injury.
The 1500 BST kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes while the visiting fans were escorted to the ground from the city centre.
After the game, police outside the ground used batons to keep opposing fans apart and to protect themselves.
Superintendent Hemingway said: "There were times when mass disorder was only prevented by the courageous action by small groups of police officers who were confronted by men intent on violence."
He said that in the circumstances mass arrests were not possible.
But video evidence would be studied which he was sure would identify many of those responsible for the violence.
Sheffield United won the game 5-3.
