Special safety measures are being considered for the FA Cup quarter-final clash between Sheffield United and Leeds United after violence marred their previous meeting.

The two clubs meet on 9 March at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground.

South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield United are being cautious following trouble when the Blades and Whites clashed in the fourth round of the Worthington Cup in November.

Police describe the tie as a "challenging fixture" and the club are considering how to reduce the level of drinking before the game.

Following November's 2-1 defeat, Leeds fans pulled up dozens of seats hurling them from the stand and flares were launched into the crowd.

Riot police, dogs and horses were needed to keep order.

Discussions are underway between the Football Association, Sheffield United, South Yorkshire Police and television companies to decide what time to stage the FA Cup tie game.

Sheffield United safety manager Steve Hicks said: "What we want to try and do is to inhibit the potential for drinking alcohol before the game, if possible.

"But if we do that and have an early kick-off the other side of the coin is that Sheffield police will have to deal with a number of supporters in Sheffield city centre, possibly drinking after the match."

Superintendent Martin Hemingway, match commander at Bramall Lane, said: "We are working hard with the Football Association and Sheffield United Football Club to establish the best time to hold this game.

"Timing is essential to combine public safety with the desire of the many thousands of genuine supporters to play this game at a reasonable time.

"In terms of the policing operation it will be another challenging fixture for us."
