Seaside police prepare for car 'cruise'
Concerned police have pledged a high-visibility presence around the site of an annual legal "cruise" to be held in Weston-super-Mare.

An estimated 15,000 cars and 35,000 people are expected at the 2003 Weston Wheels event at the disused RAF Locking airfield on Sunday, 24 August.

Chief Inspector Owen Leleu, of Avon and Somerset Police said: "We support the organised Weston Wheels event as a valuable opportunity for car enthusiasts to gather and demonstrate their vehicles legally and safely, off the public roads.

"However as the event will inevitably cause traffic congestion, there will be officers on dedicated traffic duty to help ease any problems on the day."

'Safe driving'

He said anyone attending could help by driving sensibly and with consideration when arriving and leaving the site.

Tristan Bacon, organiser of Weston Wheels, said: "The police and North Somerset Council have helped the event tremendously over the last three years.

"Last year the force even had a stand and were able to promote safe driving and answer questions on what modifications are legal on vehicles.

"Weston Wheels is a fine example of different government agencies working with the public to address a real need within a community."
