School vows to fight merger plan
Pupils at Oakland Primary School
The school could merge with another in the same village
Parents, teachers and pupils at a Shropshire primary school facing merger have started a campaign to save it.

Oakland primary, in Bayston Hill, could close, with pupils and staff moved to nearby Longmeadow school.

A website and online petition have been set up by Oakland to gather support and try to persuade Shropshire County Council to change its proposals.

A consultation on amalgamating 16 of the county's primary schools is being carried out.

'Most improved'

The council claims radical changes are needed to tackle declining pupil numbers and financial pressures.

But it has shelved plans to consult on closing 22 other primary schools after hundreds protested against the move.

Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski visited Oakland on Monday and said he supported its campaign.

"I want the council to realise some of the unique assets of Oakland school and try to convince them to take it off the list," he said.

Cameron Taylor, Oakland's chairman of governors, said the school was one of Shropshire's most improved since 2004.
