Boss of debt-ridden trust resigns
The chairman of the debt-ridden trust in charge of both of Shropshire's main hospitals has resigned.

Phil Homer has stepped down from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, which is about 19m in debt.

Mr Homer has been the chairman of the trust since the merger of the two hospitals in 2003.

He said he had made the decision because he could not support proposals being made to alter paediatric services at the hospitals.

'Robust services'

The proposals are being put to the board by the trust's chief executive at the end of July.

Mr Homer said: "I have over my time as chairman of the Princess Royal Hospital(PRH) and this new trust expanded services at both sites.

"I cannot support alterations to services at PRH or the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site on an issue by issue basis.

"I could only support an overall balanced plan fair to both sites and communities."

A Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Trust spokesman said the issue of paediatric services would be discussed in a public session and that any proposals were always in the interest of providing robust services to the public.
