An armed man who allegedly confronted police in Shrewsbury following a car chase was overcome with a stun gun. Police said the man, believed to be in his 30s, was arrested on Monday night in Belvidere Road by officers using a baton gun and a Taser device.
Officers followed his car from Atcham after a caller alerted them to the man, a shot was allegedly fired before the car was driven off towards Shrewsbury.
The man is said to have confronted police with a weapon before his arrest.
Taken to hospital
Officers began their search after receiving a call shortly before 2330 BST on Monday, which led them to fear for the man's safety.
Police said the man's car was traced to a country road near Atcham where one shot was fired in or near to the vehicle before it was driven away.
The car was followed for several miles into Shrewsbury town centre where it collided with the Column in Abbey Foregate before carrying on into Belvidere Road where the man was confronted by officers.
He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with minor injuries.
West Mercia Police are investigating the incident which has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
A spokesperson said it was the first time the force had used a Taser gun and only the second time a baton round had been discharged.
