Council's bid to save libraries
Library books
Libri predicts libraries could soon be out of use
Shropshire County Council says it is doing all it can to stop the long-term decline in people using libraries.

A recent report from a charity campaigning for more resources for libraries predicted they could disappear within 10 to 15 years.

The "Who's in charge?" report by the Libri Trust found that the money spent on new books should be increased.

Shropshire County Council says it has doubled the money it has spent on books since 2002.

Hours extended

The Libri Trust report also said that libraries should open longer hours and that their design should be improved.

All libraries in Shropshire are now open on Saturdays, and evening opening has been extended.

The council says Sunday opening is also due to be introduced at Shrewsbury Library.

Council figures show an eight per cent increase in the number of visits to Shropshire's libraries.

Children's borrowing has increased by 15%.
