Polish staff plug skills shortage
An engineering firm says it has had to recruit welders from Poland to work in a Shropshire plant because it cannot find enough skilled workers locally.

GKN needs them to make chassis frames for the new Land Rover Discovery at its factory in Telford.

The firm said it had been trying to find welders in the West Midlands since the spring, but with little success.

Ten workers arrived last week from shipyards in Poland and more are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

They are being paid the same rate and given the same benefits as UK employees.

GKN, which used a recruitment agency to find the staff, says it expects them to be working for the company for around a year.
