Lee Nottingham, 30, had just begun a three-month sentence for theft.

A Home Office spokesman said prison staff attempted resuscitation and the prisoner was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries on 19 August.

The Prison and Probation Service Ombudsman, Stephen Shaw, is to conduct an investigation into the death and an inquest will be held.
