Mums-to-be back at maternity ward
A maternity unit in Shropshire which closed for six months because of a shortage of midwives has opened its doors to expectant mothers again.

The ward at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital in Gobowen, near Oswestry, welcomed two mothers-to-be on Thursday.

It shut down in October because 22 midwives took leave to have babies.

Hospital chiefs blamed their failure to arrange cover for the maternity leave on a national shortage of trained staff.

The move sparked a campaign to save the ward after local people became concerned it would not reopen.

But health bosses have always maintained that was never a possibility.

During the closure pregnant women needing hospital care had to travel to either Wrexham, Powys or Shrewsbury.
