Patient severely burnt in fire
A patient suffered severe burns in a fire at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The fire broke out on the on the gynaecology ward of the hospital at 2330 GMT on Monday.

A hospital spokesman said the fire was started by a "smoking related incident" in a room off the ward.

A woman is being treated at the burns unit of Selly Oak Hospital, in Birmingham.

Phil Hipkiss, head of communications at the hospital, said 30 patients were led to safety.

"Nurses quickly brought the fire under control, fire crews were called out and the ward was sealed off," he said.

"Patients returned to their beds within the hour.

"We're incredibly proud of the brave response from our nurses."

The fire caused damage to one side of the ward.
