Jobs to go at defence firm
Defence firm Alvis Vickers is set to lose more than 260 jobs at its site in Telford.

The company is blaming the job losses on the UK's withdrawal from the Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle programme.

Company bosses said the cutbacks would be made during the year, as existing contracts came to an end.

The job losses represent more than half of the workforce at the site in Hadley Castle.

Armoured cars

It follows 250 job losses at Dailycer cereals in Halesfield last week.

Dave Morgan, board member of the Telford Development Agency, said they would do all they could to help the affected workers.

Midlands-based Alvis took control of the Rolls-Royce owned Vickers in Newcastle in October 2002 in a 16m deal.

The deal made the new Alvis Vickers company the country's biggest manufacturer of armoured cars.
