Upgrades for loos
Some of south Shropshire's public toilets are due to get a brush-up as part of a 600,000 refurbishment programme.

It follows a wide-ranging review by district councillors, who have even been to look at award-winning loos in other parts of the UK.

The plans include the installation of automatic lavatories at five different sites.

But some toilet blocks will be closed, sold off, or handed to parish councils to run.

South Shropshire District Council discussed the idea in 2001 of closing all of its public loos to save money, but the idea was shelved after an outcry.

The new plans would see automatic toilets installed in Castle Square in Ludlow, the auction yard at Bishop's Castle, in Easthope, Church Stretton and at a new site at Cleobury Mortimer.

Another toilet block in Ludlow could also be refurbished, along with the lavatories at Craven Arms.

The council said a decision would be taken on the future of other public conveniences once more people had been consulted about the issue.
