Abandoned cars crushed to save cash
More than 100 untaxed and abandoned cars in Telford have been taken off the roads and crushed.

The cars were put under a 38-tonne mobile crusher on Wednesday morning.

Telford and Wrekin Council said it was a cheap way of dealing with an ongoing problem.

With the cost of removing abandoned cars rising to 8,000 in some cases, the borough council has been looking for a cheaper solution.

Operation Cubit is run jointly by the police, fire service and the borough council.

More than 100 cars have already been seized.

As well as burnt out wrecks, the council will also remove cars which are for sale but have been illegally parked on pavements and grass verges.

A council spokeswoman said there were a lot of people in the area who repeatedly sold cars from the public highway.
