Thousands of questionnaires are being distributed throughout Shropshire to give people a chance to have their say on genetically modified (GM) foods. It is part of a consultation exercise by the county council, which is also offering the opportunity for comments to be made online.
The government is testing public opinion on the issue before deciding whether to allow farmers to grow GM crops commercially.
Trial plantings have been taking place for several years in Shropshire and elsewhere in the face of opposition from environmental campaigners.
The arguments for and against GM produce were aired at a debate in Shrewsbury's Shire Hall last week.
The results of the consultation exercise will be discussed by councillors next month and Shropshire's views will then be relayed to ministers.
If public opinion is against the planting of GM crops, the council could choose to prevent their being grown in the county.
