Farm safety under the spotlight
Safety inspectors will be out in force this week as part of a campaign to reduce farm accidents in Shropshire.

A team of seven agricultural inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be calling on farms in the north and west of the county from Monday.

They will be carrying out field checks and yard inspections, paying special attention to the use of tractors and other machinery.

The inspectors will also be concentrating on livestock handling, working at heights and the safety of children.

Important message

The visits are aimed particularly at farmers who did not attend a special safety awareness day last year.

Dr Phil Smith, the government's principal inspector for agriculture, said: "It is important that we get the health and safety message across to all who work in the industry.

"Safety awareness days are one means of doing this because they demonstrate what can go wrong and the precautions to take.

He added: "Although HSE inspectors will offer help and advice, they will not hesitate to take action to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
