Mrs Bhandari says her curry sauces are "an alternative to ketchup" |
A woman who developed curry sauces in her home kitchen is now producing them for the supermarket giant ASDA. Chef Kiran Bhandari is taking on traditional food accompaniments like tomato ketchup or brown sauce, with curry-based table sauces. Mrs Bhandari teaches cooking classes and was convinced by her students to make a business from her recipes. Now the production of the sauces has moved from her Oxford kitchen to a larger factory in Birmingham. The mother of five says that she got into cooking because it makes her happy. "Since I was eight years old my mum taught me cookery and I just love it. I want to make something different every time," she said. Kiran's daughter Anu gave up her job in IT to help her mother with the business and with marketing the Holy Cow sauces. "Mum was getting good responses from her students and we realised there was a gap in the market, so we came up with the brand," she said. Anu then approached major supermarkets to stock the sauces and co-ordinated a £300,000 contract for the family product. A spokesperson for the buyer at ASDA said they were 'very pleased' with the performance of the product so far.
