Station revamp is a step closer

It is hoped the refit will encourage people to use public transport

Oxfordshire County Council has approved a multi-million pound plan to update Didcot Railway Station.

Councillors backed the 5.4m scheme to redevelop the station's forecourt into a transport interchange.

The project is part of the Local Transport Programme and a planning application will now be submitted.

Councillor Ian Hudspeth said it would provide better and safer facilities for walkers, cyclists and bus users who currently jostle for space.

Forecourt gridlock

Mr Hudspeth said: "At busy times the current station forecourt becomes gridlocked as each transport mode jostles for the same limited space causing safety issues for pedestrians and delays to local bus services."

"This has an impact on the reliability and attractiveness of buses as an alternative to the car."

The new interchange, if approved, will open before the spring of 2010.

The redesign will also feature a central pedestrian piazza flanked by a dedicated bus and delivery area and a larger taxi rank.

There will be more secure cycle parking in a separate area.

A new pick up, drop off and waiting area will also be built at the station.
