Sports award winners to be named

The winners of the Oxfordshire Sports Awards for 2008 will be announced at a gala event at the Kassam Stadium later.

The event is due to be attended by some of the country's top sporting people, including Olympic gold medallist, rower Steve Williams.

Roger Cowdrey, the chairman of the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership, said the achievements of people from a variety of sports would be recognised.

"It's not just about football and cricket," he said.

"Yes we have got swimming clubs and rugby clubs who have nominated people, but we have also got this year for the first time, the extreme sportsperson.

"The three people there - one is a kite surfer, one is a mountain boarder and the other does formation sky diving."
