Train operator to cut fare prices
Train passengers have been told to expect a cut in off-peak fares.

First Great Western will implement what it calls "substantial reductions" in off-peak fares between Oxford and Bicester and on the Oxford Canal Line.

The company is also cutting fares on many of its off-peak services in Somerset, Gloucs and Berkshire.

It comes after the rail operator announced improvements and apologised for not meeting expectations following protests by passengers.

Richard Rowlands, First Great Western regional manager, said: "Our strategy is to ensure the continued strong growth of our business while offering excellent value for money."

Standard and day-return tickets and travel cards from Cholsey, Tilehurst, Goring & Streatley, and Pangbourne stations to London Paddington could see price cuts of up to 13%, bringing them in line with fares from Reading.

In the West, off-peak train services from Worcester, Bristol, Cheltenham, Gloucester, and Swindon will also see price reductions.

The largest is a 48% reduction in a cheap day-return ticket between Cheltenham/Gloucester and Swindon, down to 7 from 13.60.

The new fares come into effect from Sunday, 20 May.
