RAF base set for major expansion
Brize Norton
RAF Brize Norton is used for the repatriation of military personnel
Plans for a 175m expansion of one of the UK's largest military bases have been given the go-ahead.

RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire, is set for two years of redevelopment including building a new terminal.

The number of aircraft using the base is set to double by 2009 with RAF Lyneham earmarked for closure.

The upgrade will include concreting over parts of the base near Carterton and Wing Cdr Tony Toner said the expansion will bring jobs to the area.

"Brize Norton is and will continue to be the biggest military base in the RAF," he said.

"It will be the centre for (RAF) transport and refuelling."

Work could start in March.
