Girls queued throughout the day in Oxford for the auditions |
More than 1,700 young hopefuls have queued to take part in an open audition for the central role in a film based on the children's book His Dark Materials. Girls aged between nine and 13 gathered in Oxford's High Street hoping to land the role of Lyra Belacqua - the heroine in Philip Pullman's novel.
Auditions are taking place in Cambridge, Oxford, Kendal and Exeter.
The movie is directed by Anand Tucker and will be produced by New Line which made the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Film-makers have said they are looking for a girl "who embodies Lyra's loyalty, bravery and mischievous nature" and who is not "immersed in the 21st Century".
Those who are successful will be invited to return for a second interview.
