Roadworks spark major tailbacks in Oxfordshire |
Thousands of motorists experienced major delays as the next phase of roadworks aimed at easing congestion at a busy roundabout got under way. For the next 10 weeks, drivers can expect long delays due to the work on the traffic-calming scheme for the A40 Headington roundabout in Oxfordshire.
Traffic signals are to be installed on the four busiest arms of the roundabout between May and December this year.
The Highways Agency said it was "short-term pain for long-term gain".
A local authority spokesman said: "The project also involves constructing a new dedicated westbound A40 carriageway through the centre of the existing roundabout - giving rise to the nickname 'hamburger'.
"On Monday, a contra-flow system will be introduced so that work to reconstruct the Sandhills junction can start."
