BMW set out to make 100,000 Minis each year |
A record 200,000 Minis have been made by car giant BMW this year at the firm's car plant in Oxford. BMW said it had doubled the 100,000 cars it set out to make each year at the Cowley plant when production of the new model began in April 2001.
In February, BMW invested an extra 100m into the production of Mini, creating 200 new jobs at the factory.
The 200,000th car - a Mini Cooper S Convertible - went to an Australian buyer, BMW said.
Dr Anton Heiss, the plant's managing director, said: "We're delighted to have reached this important milestone in line with the demands of the market.
"It's thanks to the hard work, flexibility and commitment from the plant's associates that we have been able to achieve this.
"It's a great way to end the year for everyone at the plant."
A total of about 766,000 Minis have now been made at Cowley.
