New website for carers goes live
Thousands of carers across Oxfordshire who look after elderly or disabled relatives and friends are set to benefit from a new website.

The Carers in Oxfordshire website is aimed at supporting carers as well as ensuring they are aware of the vital benefits they could be missing out on.

The county has three carers' centres, in Oxford, Didcot and Banbury.

The website was launched on Friday to mark the national Carers Rights Day. It is funded by the county council.

Martin Avis, executive manager of the Oxfordshire Carers Forum which acts as a carers' watchdog, said: "We know that nationally some 40-60% of disability benefits go unclaimed.

"This means many carers must be missing out, because a carer can only claim carers' allowance if the person they are looking after receives disability living allowance or an attendance allowance."

According to the 2001 Census, Oxfordshire has around 55,000 unpaid carers.
