Restrictions on motorcyclists are designed to protect the route |
Police patrols have been placed on one of Britain's oldest roads to ensure motorcyclists are not tearing it up. Restrictions have been put in place along The Ridgeway to protect the surface of the route over the winter.
Oxfordshire County Council, Thames Valley Police and the National Trails Office are working together to protect the route once used by prehistoric man.
Two patrol days have already been held and warnings have been given to those using motorbikes in restricted areas.
Bikes seized
The bans were put in place in response to concerns that trail-bikers and off-road drivers were churning up the 6,000-year-old trail.
Bikers found in those areas face a fine and possible prosecution.
Others found in areas outside the restrictions but causing a nuisance face having their motorbike seized.
The restrictions in Oxfordshire are west of Wayland's Smithy in the Vale of the White Horse, at Lattin Down above Wantage and a section from Britwell Salome to the A40 at Lewknor.
Further patrols are to be held over the next few months in Oxfordshire with more to be arranged in other parts of the 85-mile route running from Wiltshire to Buckinghamshire.
