Care home teenagers cost 400,000
The cost of keeping just two young people in a residential care home is almost half a million pounds, councillors have revealed.

Hollow Way in Oxfordshire prepares vulnerable young people for the outside world after they have been discharged from Thornbury House residential home.

But councillors say the centre is no longer needed and is costing 204,000 for each of the two residents.

They are canvassing opinions with a view to closing the unit next summer.

We now need to look at whether we can provide care for these two young people in a different way, with foster families, for instance
Cllr Janet Godden
Councillors say they will talk to the two residents themselves and also to relatives and support agencies.

The tenancy on Hollow Way runs out in June 2005.

Charles Waddicor, social care director, said: "We must remember that these two young people look on Hollow Way as their home.

"For that reason we must take their views into account in reaching a decision on the future of this unit."

Portfolio holder for children's services, cllr Janet Godden, said: "Hollow Way provided a valuable service for young people in the past, and staff there still do an excellent job.

"We now need to look at whether we can provide care for these two young people in a different way, with foster families, for instance."
