School children kept in the shade
The sun
Children are to be kept out of the sun at peak times
Nursery school teachers are to stop children from playing in the sun at the hottest times in an attempt to protect them against the risk of skin cancer.

Staff at 24 nursery schools across Oxfordshire will also apply at least factor 15 sunscreen to their pupils.

The schools have all signed up to a new "Sun Safe Zone" initiative that has the backing of Cancer Research UK.

It will see the youngsters told to wear hats and to avoid outdoor activities from 1100 BST to 1400 BST.

Staff will also actively encourage parents to set a good example by following the same rules.

Oxfordshire County Council launched the scheme, which is also backed by the National Radiological Protection Board.

Nigel Strick, the council's head of trading standards, said: "Being at school or nursery isn't like being on a special trip to the seaside and so it would be easy to overlook the risks our children face.

"We must do everything we can to protect them and teach them the importance of being careful in the sun."
