Students and local people gathered to listen to hymns at dawn |
Thousands of people have congregated on Oxford's Magdalen Bridge to celebrate May Day as the sun comes up. Safety barriers were up to protect the revellers, who gather every year to hear choristers sing hymns at dawn from the tower at Magdalen College.
Stewards have been stopping people from jumping into the River Cherwell and the area is an alcohol-free zone.
Last year, at least four people jumped into the river after climbing over a two-metre security fence.
The bridge was closed during the celebrations for three years until 2001, after one young reveller was paralysed.
