Sixteen channels will be transmitted to mobile phone handsets |
Digital television channels are to be transmitted straight to hi-tech mobile telephones in a new pilot scheme. Nine broadcast transmitters are to be used around Oxford with 500 O2 customers testing the mobile phone with built-in digital television receiver.
Customers will be offered 16 channels when the scheme begins in spring 2005.
The trial, announced by O2 and NTL's Broadcast Division on Friday, is said to be the UK's first practical test of multi-channel television on mobiles.
It is being held to see how effective the handsets - designed by Sony Semiconductor & Electronic Solutions (SES) and Nokia - actually are.
Terry Howard, head of media business development in NTL's Broadcast Division, said: "This is a commercial trial to test the business case for a mobile TV service in the UK."
