Buses withdrawn after fire fears
Buses have been taken out of service in Oxford following concerns over fires on similar vehicles in London.

The Oxford Bus Company has announced it is withdrawing 17 Citaro buses.

The single-deckers will be taken out of service for modifications but are due back on the roads before the end of the week, said manufacturer Evobus.

The move comes after all 130 bendy-buses in London were withdrawn for a week for modification work following three separate fires on the vehicles.

Bus gutted

The affected buses operate park-and-ride schemes in Oxford, as well as operating on the Oxford to Abingdon route.

An Evobus spokesman said: "We expect the Oxford buses to be back in service within a couple of days."

An inquiry has been launched in London following the latest fire, when a number 436 was gutted after bursting into flames on Park Lane on Saturday night.

The passengers and driver escaped unharmed, but it was the third fire on the 200,000 buses since December.

According to Evobus, the Citaro is the biggest selling city bus in Europe and also used by operators in Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester and Berkshire.
