Watchdog criticises youth prison
Huntercombe Young Offenders Institute
Over half of inmates at Huntercombe said they felt unsafe
The prison watchdog has voiced concerns over safety at a young offenders institution in south Oxfordshire.

Over half of teenagers at Huntercombe Young Offenders' Institution in Nuffield, near Wallingford, feel unsafe according to a new report by Chief Inspector of Prisons, Anne Owers.

The prison used to take 18 to 20-year-olds but now deals exclusively with under 17s.

Ms Owers said the institution was teetering on the brink of being unsafe and criticised managers for not effectively tackling bullying and anti-social behaviour.

In contrast, she praised rehabilitation and education at the youth prison.

Elaine Jones, governor of the prison, said despite the criticisms, they are committed to making improvements.
