Sars ban stops couple's adoption
Sars patient
The virus has so far killed nearly 600 people worldwide
A couple who have spent the last two years trying adopt a baby in China, have now been told they cannot bring her home because of Sars.

Nicky and Jonathan Holt from Bicester, Oxfordshire, were due to fly out this weekend but China has suspended travel permits to foreign couples who are adopting babies there.

The Holts say the risk of Sars is low, their daughter is already nine months old and they are missing out on a crucial stage of her development.

There have been 7,628 probable cases of Sars worldwide and 587 people have died from the virus.

About three million children are in orphanages in China.

Every year thousands are adopted overseas but to avoid spreading Sars the Chinese authorities have suspended all adoptions for three months.
