Ambulance bases set to close

Seven ambulance bases across Oxfordshire look set to be closed as part of a modernisation programme.

Bosses at the Oxfordshire Ambulance NHS Trust say the bases are in poor repair, are badly located and are barely used by crews.

They say cutting the number of ambulance stations would help improve emergency response times.

The trust is now holding a three-month public consultation on how it should be run in the future.

At present, there are 10 stations across the county, as well as the trust's headquarters in Oxford itself.

But the trust says its crews rarely use these bases.

Instead, they are moved around the region to well-known accident hot spots - a strategy that has been proven to reduce response times to emergency calls.

The trust has confirmed that it wants to move its operations to three centres in or near Oxford, Banbury and Didcot, and transform its current headquarters into a training facility.

But they are keen to stress that the changes would not mean a cut in the number of ambulances operating on the streets of Oxfordshire.
