Commuters flee train fire

Oxford railway station was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after a fire on board a Virgin Voyager train.

The alarm was raised at about 1630 BST.

Passengers were cleared from the train and there were no reports of any injuries.

The station has been partly re-opened and the train moved into a siding for an investigation to be carried out.

Earlier, Jonathan Radley of Thames Trains, the firm which runs the station, said: "We've got a Virgin Voyager train stuck at Oxford at the moment.

"It is on platform one which is the main platform from Oxford to Reading and London.

"Firefighters have been called out and for precautionary measures and they have evacuated both the train and Oxford railway station."

A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire Service said a fire had broken out on a five-carriage train but was extinguished by both an on-board system and firefighters.

Delays are expected on the line throughout Wednesday evening.
