Plaque honours county's war dead

A plaque dedicated to Nottinghamshire people who lost their lives in wars has been unveiled.

The event at County Hall in West Bridgford was held to mark the first day of poppy sales in the countdown to Remembrance Day on 11 November.

It was attended by veteran Harry Higton, 90, who survived the bombing of the Lancastria during World War II.

Councillors said the brass memorial was important to honour those from the county who "died for freedom".

Remember sacrifice

The plaque, which cost £1,600 to make, is designed to hold wreaths over Remembrance weekend and will remain at County Hall as a lasting memorial to Nottinghamshire's "fallen heroes".

The unveiling event was also attended by councillors, the High Sheriff of Nottingham and representatives of the Royal British Legion.

Conservative county councillor Kay Cutts said: "The plaque is the county's tribute to all the people from Nottinghamshire that have fought and died for freedom.

"It is important we never forget the sacrifice they made."
